Norwegian promotes ‘freestyle cruising’

The term “freestyle cruising” makes me think of a cruise ship leaping about in an “Xtreme” way, a la freestyle skiing. Having covered the cruise industry for several years, I know what Norwegian Cruise Line really means when it refers to freestyle cruising. But, I’m not sure the general public has any clue what this phrase designates.

Norwegian is about to change all that. The cruise line will debut a new brand identity, with emphasis on its nontraditional, relaxed attitude, on October 2. A series of TV, radio, print, newspaper, and online ads will explain to potential cruisers how Norwegian is different from the other lines. A redesigned website will feature enhanced functionality and new content. New York residents especially won’t be able to open a magazine or walk through Times Square without being aware of Norwegian’s unique style.

So what is freestyle cruising? It’s Norwegian’s attitude that you should have choice and flexibility on a vacation at sea. The line creates this atmosphere by allowing guests to eat whenever they want and giving them a choice of up to 10 different restaurants. On a Norwegian ship, cruisers are not required to dress up on certain evenings; resort casual is acceptable at all hours. Plus, each cruise offers a variety of lounges, bars, theaters, and activities, as well as cabin types and combinations. The goal is to create a less structured and more relaxed onboard atmosphere.
