Low-cost carrier Southwest announced today it is seeking permission to serve two gates at the Washington, D.C., area Dulles international airport. Southwest intends to start flying from Dulles this fall. The airline already serves nearby Baltimore (BWI) airport.
“Dulles will be a terrific complement to our Baltimore [service],” says Gary Kelly, Southwest’s Chief Executive Officer, in a press release on the airline’s website.
It’s not clear yet how Southwest plans to incorporate Dulles into its route structure, but the results should be interesting. Baltimore is the airline’s fourth-largest center with more than 150 daily departures.
