With its mix of pleasant weather and affordable travel, June in Puerto Rico is an ideal setting for an early summer vacation.
According to Nelly Cruz, director of Public Relations for the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, Puerto Rico’s tropical climate means the weather in June is quite pleasant. Cruz reports “average highs range from the mid to upper 80s with lows averaging in the upper 70s. The island benefits from constant trade winds which helps to keep the temps down and the climate enjoyable.”
Given that Puerto Rico is in the Caribbean’s hurricane belt, and June is the beginning of the stormy season, it’s logical to worry about getting caught in bad weather. However, our research shows that in recent years, June has been a very low-risk month for such natural disasters, which tend to occur in the late summer and early fall.
What to do
Though Puerto Rico is largely known to tourists for its beaches and resort culture, don’t miss the island’s history and natural beauty. Stroll down the streets of old San Juan to see hundreds of restored Spanish colonial buildings and get a taste of Europe in the heart of the Caribbean. Outside of the city, the El Yunque rainforest and small island of Culebra provide a hospitable environment for abundant wildlife and biodiversity.
If you do go this June, there are several events to consider early in the month. For a last-minute musical getaway, the Heineken Jazz Fest features some of the hottest acts in the genre, including Al Di Meola and the Count Basie Orchestra.
From June 3 through 5, an Artisans Fair of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company will showcase the talents of locals who create art, music, and dance. While this fair is located in San Juan, visitors to Ponce can visit that city’s Feria de ArtesaníÂas from June 4 through 6.
How to save
By going a couple of months after the peak winter tourist season, you can save on airfare and accommodations while arriving just in time for some great summer events. For a wide variety of deals on the island, check the Puerto Rico Is Fun promotion. At hotels, resorts, and small inns, Puerto Rico Is Fun features appealing extras such as room upgrades, calling cards, and admission into cultural events with each stay.
You can pick up a cheap flight to Puerto Rico by taking advantage of JetBlue’s new service. The low-fare carrier has brought its attractive prices to the Caribbean, and now has regular flights to Aguadilla, Ponce, and San Juan. Find the latest offers from JetBlue and other airlines in our Caribbean air deals section.
While visiting in June will bring lower prices, Puerto Rico is not an island that shuts down when the tourist season ends. Nelly Cruz explains that internal tourism is high, so although June hotel prices are lower, local holiday weekends are an exception. A good way to avoid these weekend price hikes is to travel midweek whenever possible.
