Warnings and Dangers in Manila: Airport Security Checks
Manila is the capital city of the Philippines and regularly sees thousands of tourists fly through the Manila Airport. There are many warnings and dangers to be mindful of about the Manila Airport security checks and below we have highlighted just a few of them for travelers to be aware of.
No Photographs
When walking through the airport, taking pictures inside the terminals is strictly forbidden. When attempting to take a photograph, tourists will be quickly warned by the ever present security guards walking throughout the airport. While the Philippines are not officially in a war, they are constantly fighting the bands of terrorists located in the southern portion of the country. The reason for such tight and strict security is an attempt to cut down on terroristic activities in the capital city.
No Canned Goods
When going through security, be aware that canned goods are not allowed to be transported as part of carry on luggage. This is different from most other airport regulations. If tourists would like to take home canned goods to friends and family it must be packed in the checked luggage.
Tips and Airport Fees
When moving around Manila Airport, know that there are things very different about this airport compared to any other airport in the world. First, be prepared to pay a fee for simply entering through the terminal gates. Second, be aware and read all signs and information around the airport. Tipping is very much expected throughout including anyone who helps to handle baggage. While the bus transfers between terminals are free, be mindful that the employees helping to move luggage on to the bus expect to be tipped. Furthermore, when leaving the airport, most hotels will have a free shuttle to transport arriving tourists. Crafty taxi drivers will try to lure tourists to their final destination, but of course these will cost money for the transportation.
High Security
If travelers are not accustom to the high level of security that is present around Manila Airport they can become a bit uneasy. Expect to see armed soldiers everywhere. It is very normal to see armed soldiers inside and around the outside of the airport. Always remember to keep vigilant when moving through a foreign city.
Security Check
When going through security checks at the airport, it is highly recommended that any valuables remain on your person at all times. There have been several complaints about valuables going through the security checks and then missing when the bags are returned to the tourist. Despite brining the missing valuables to the attention of the airport and other security staff, the complaints are mostly ignored. Being that the complaints are ignored would lead one to believe that the airport management is well aware that these practices are being conducted and likely turn a blind eye.
