American Airlines and Canadian discount carrier WestJet have expanded their codeshare relationship to include partial frequent-flyer program reciprocity in the tie-up.
Effective immediately, members of American’s AAdvantage program can earn miles for WestJet flights; and reciprocally, members of WestJet’s Rewards program can earn WestJet dollars when flying on American.
For now, reciprocal redemption is not part of the deal.
While this is a much bigger win for WestJet Rewards members, who can now earn dollars for flights throughout American’s massive network of 260 airports in more than 50 countries, it’s a modest step forward for the AAdvantage program as well.
WestJet serves 76 destinations, mostly in Canada, with a fleet of 98 B737s.
