Swim with Whale Sharks in Ningaloo Reef, Australia

Every year between March and July, whale sharks migrate to Ningaloo Reef. These gentle giants are the world's largest fish and can grow to more than 50 feet long—but don't worry, despite their menacing mouths, they are filter feeders and harmless to humans. Ningaloo Reef is one of the only places in the world where you can swim with whale sharks; surprisingly, they're mostly unfazed by having people near them.

I recommend a day trip with Three Islands Whale Shark Dive. This outfitter uses an exclusive spotter plane to locate whale sharks from the air, and then takes up to 10 people at a time into the water to swim with the sharks. The tour includes snorkeling gear and optional wet suits and stinger suits, plus a photographer who takes underwater pictures of you and the whale sharks (the CD of photos is included in the price) and plenty of food and drinks throughout the day.

Cape Range National Park, Australia

The Cape Range National Park is a sprawling 124,988 acres, 31 miles of which are pristine beaches. The park has an astounding diversity of landscapes. Driving up from the beach on winding roads through the limestone ranges affords views of the park's more than 700 deep caves.

Cape Range National Park is also one of the best places in the area to spot emus, kangaroos, and a wide variety of birds. For some of the best wildlife spotting, take a cruise down Yardie Creek, or walk along the trail on top of the surrounding gorge, which is fed by the ocean's salt water. Flora abounds in the park as well: More than 630 species of flowering plants have been found here.

Ningaloo Reef, Australia

Ningaloo Reef, at an impressive 161 miles long, is one of the longest fringing reefs in the world. What makes the reef unique is that in many spots it's only around 16 feet offshore, so visitors can simply walk or swim out to explore the reef rather than having to find a boat to access it.

Ningaloo Reef is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including three turtle species, humpback whales, manta rays, 500 species of fish, and 250 species of coral. In certain areas of the reef, you can even do a "drift snorkel," letting the current carry you over the reef—no swimming required.

Perth, Australia

Sunshine and city life—Perth has it all. In fact, Perth gets more sunshine than any other major city in Australia! Enjoy all that sunshine with a visit to Kings Park, one of the world's largest urban parks. Kings Park is also home to the Western Australian Botanic Garden, which houses more than 3,000 species of flora.

Take in some culture and history at Perth's Art Gallery of Western Australia (famous for its collection of indigenous artwork) or at the Western Australian Museum. And don't miss Perth's modern-day culture, either: The city's bar and restaurant scene is thriving. Visitors come from all over Australia to attend Perth's famous Sunday Sessions, where local bars are packed with revelers enjoying a drink or two before the end of the weekend.

Fremantle, Australia

Just 12 miles from downtown Perth sits the port precinct of Fremantle. Considered one of the region's hippest areas, it's full of casual cafes, pubs, and eclectic shops.

Fremantle is still a working port, so you'll be guaranteed the freshest seafood if you dine here. Come and while away a day strolling the beach, making friends at one of the old pubs, or downing a coffee on Cappuccino Strip. Add a little history into your day with a visit to the fascinating Fremantle Prison.

Rottnest Island, Australia

Locals call it "Rotto," but don't let the name (or nickname) for Rottnest Island put you off. This peaceful island, just a short ferry ride from Perth, is a car-free zone. Rent a bicycle to get around and explore. Its secluded beaches are incredible, and there are more than 63 of them, as well as 20 bays available for snorkeling or sunning yourself. The snorkeling is particularly good as the limestone reefs that surround the island attract all sorts of colorful fish and corals.

The waters off of Rottnest Island have not been historically hospitable to boats, but the remains of more than 10 wrecks around the island make for great diving today.

Purnululu National Park, Australia

The landscape of Purnululu National Park is a picturesque wonder that is different from anywhere else in Australia. The park's Bungle Bungle Range is made up of 350-million-year-old orange-and-black-striped beehive-shaped sedimentary formations.

Hike to Cathedral Gorge, a huge natural "amphitheater." Or, for a more tropical feel, hike out to Mini Palms Gorge, which is filled with Livistona palms.
