Competition for customers on the transcontinental routes has never been fiercer.
American is touting its brand-new Airbus A321T (the “T” for transcontinental) planes, specially configured for the airline’s flights between New York and both Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Later this year, JetBlue will be adding first-class seating to its transcon flights, including two “private suites.”
United, of course, has its recently refreshed p.s. service, “an international product for an exceptional transcontinental travel experience between New York (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX) or San Francisco (SFO).”
And augmenting the splashy hardware has been a revolving selection of mileage bonuses.
For its part, Delta announced the following upgrades to its Economy Comfort product on non-stop flights between New York and Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle, effective immediately:
- Complimentary pillow and blanket
- Sleep kit (eye shades and ear plugs)
- Complimentary Luvo snack wraps and water bottle
The new amenities are in addition to existing Economy Comfort features, including extra legroom, free drinks, and priority boarding.
Upgrades are always to be applauded, especially when they affect coach-class travel, which lately has been treated as an afterthought by airlines focused on the higher profits generated by business and first class. But as upgrades go, these are almost embarrassingly modest.
