The Dreamliner Era Begins at American

American today became the second U.S. airline, after United, to fly Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner jet.

The airline deployed its first new Dreamliner as flight AA2320 this morning, between Dallas and Chicago. On June 2, the planes will be moved onto international routes, beginning with flights between Dallas and Beijing, followed by Dallas-Buenos Aires flights two days later.

According to SeatGuru, American’s Dreamliners are configured with 226 seats: 28 in business class, 57 in premium economy, and 141 in coach. The coach seats are spaced with 31 inches of pitch. That’s less legroom than most Southwest B737s, which typically have 32 or 33 inches of pitch. And on the long-haul flights the Dreamliner is designed for, that tight squeeze is a significant comfort drawback.

While coach seating comfort may be substandard, the new aircraft are technologically state-of-the-art, featuring power outlets and USB ports at every seat, international WiFi capability, and a robust inflight entertainment system.
