US Airways’ much-discussed 100 percent bonus for purchased miles was set to expire today, November 15.
With no fanfare, or even notice, the airline has extended the offer until November 30.
Is this the promotion’s last gasp, and consumers’ last chance to take advantage of one of the most generous miles-for-sale bonuses ever?
Probably not.
Given US Airways’ propensity to extend this offer—over and over and over—it’s likely that we’ll be seeing the promotion again. But that’s hardly a certainty. And even if the offer is resurrected, it could be based on a more modest bonus.
So if you’re interested in acquiring a significant cache of significantly discounted US Airways miles, you can definitely do so in the next two weeks. Thereafter, your mileage may vary.
Offer Details
Through November 30, US Airways Dividend Miles members will earn a 100 percent bonus on miles purchased for their own accounts or as gifts for other program members.
There’s a limit of 50,000 miles that may be purchased, which translates into 100,000 miles with the bonus.
Registration is not required—the bonus will be applied automatically at check-out.
Deal or No Deal
The math is pretty compelling.
With the bonus, you can buy 100,000 Dividend Miles miles for $1,375, not including fees and taxes. That’s enough miles for a business-class award ticket to Europe on one of US Airways’ Star Alliance partners—a ticket that could easily cost more than $6,000.
Sure, you’re still at the mercy of capacity controls—booking that award ticket may require patience and perseverance. And there’s always the legitimate question about the real value of a business-class ticket: Is it truly worth the hefty premium over coach?
But the opportunity to fly round-trip to Europe in business class for less than a quarter of the normal ticket price merits the attention of any value-conscious traveler.
Reader Reality Check
This is undeniably an attention-getter. Is it a buy for you?
If it is, what’s your plan for using the purchased miles?
