Border Italy/Switzerland, Como – Off the Beaten Path

Off the Beaten Path in Como Border Italy/Switzerland

Como, situated on the border of Italy and Switzerland, offers a unique opportunity to visit two countries essentially at the same time. Even during the busy travel seasons, Como does offer a few opportunities to escape and go “off the beaten path.”

Lugano

Lugano is very close to Como, but you will have to pass through the border in order to visit. Lugano is on the namesake lake, Lake di Lugano, that is shared between Switzerland and Italy. Lugano offers many opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Balcone d’Italia

Situated just above Lake Lugano, this location is easily reachable from Como and is near Lanzo d’Intelvi. It is a wonderful viewpoint at over 1,300 meters overlooking the valley of Lugano and the Swiss Alps. It is the last piece of soil of Italy. The view from Balcone d’Italia is stunning, as are the sunsets. The mountain you can see in the back as sort of a hunch is Monte Rosa, standing over 4,000 meters high. There is also a nice bar and restaurant here.

Bellinzona

You can easily take a train from Como to Bellinzona, which is home to three castles, Castelgrande, Montbello, and Sasso Corbarco, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This beautiful location is situated by the Ticino River with a strategic position along the route over the Alpine passes. Below Castelgrande is the old town with its narrow, cobbled streets with squares and fine buildings. The Town Hall is not to be missed.

No matter whether you are coming from Switzerland or Italy, Como has a lot to offer that you won’t find anywhere else.
