Cambodia Transportation
If you are planning a trip to Cambodia, you will need to understand some of the different types of public and private transportation available to you as a tourist. While the largest cities of Phnom Pehn and Battambang willl have almost everything, smaller villages are likely to have limited options. Be ready to try a new way to get across town or a river.
Airports and Ferries
The busiest international airport is located in Siem Reap, with connections to China, Japan, Australia, Europe, Russia and the Americas. You may have to make several connections before leaving your home country, but many airlines fly direct into Siem Reap. With a large variety of rivers, coastline, and lakes interwoven with Cambodian towns, getting around is often accomplished on boats. The ferry system at Kep and Koh Rong Samloem are convenient options. Look for longtail launches for rent and a unique boating experience.
Rental Scooters, Cars, and Bicycles
The larger cities have international car rental companies where you can rent a familiar compact car for your stay. However, if your connection is in a more rural province, expect to find a more limited selection of rentals available. Motorbikes and scooters are very popular, while bicycles can get you around town without searching for parking lots. Check the forecast for the time of year you are planning to visit, as riding a scooter in the rainy season is not the best choice.
Taxis, Tuk Tuks, and Tour Buses
Tuk tuks are the pedal-powered hacks available in almost any sizeable town or city. For a small cost, sit back under the open air canopy and enjoy a ride out to the shops. Mini-busses are available for tours to popular destinations like Ankor Wat.
