Canada What to Pack
A successful trip to Canada starts when you pack all of the right things. Use our packing list for a trip to Canada if you want to avoid wasting time and money purchasing the little things you happened to forget.
Luggage
Whether you’re headed to the vast Canadian countryside or any populous city, duffles, backpacks, and carry-ons are clear must-haves in this country.
Winter Trips
Winters in Canada tend to be cold, and many areas receive significant amounts of snowfall. If you’re going in the winter, you’ll need a thick winter coat and boots meant for walking in snow. Wear these on the plane to save some space in your luggage. Don’t forget waterproof gloves, scarves, and winter hats. Those who are planning outdoor-based activities might want to bring an extra set of these things, since it can be difficult to dry them overnight. Consider fleece-lined jeans or tight leggings that you can wear under your jeans to keep your legs warm.
Summer Trips
You’ll need a variety of clothing for a summer trip to Canada. Days can be hot, but nights tend to cool down significantly, so be sure to bring a light jacket or sweatshirt for later in the day. Comfortable walking shoes make it easier for you to spend the days out in nature. Many outdoor areas have mosquitoes. If you want to reduce your chances of getting bitten, wear long sleeves and pants when you’re out hiking. Mosquito spray is helpful. You’ll also want all the usual summer supplies: sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats. While these are all readily available at most stores, you won’t want to waste money on things you already have at home.
Clothes to Pack
Your Camera
With breathtaking views, even amateur photographers will be able to take some great shots of the country. A wide-angle lens can help you get even better photographs. Don’t forget extra batteries, the camera’s charger, film, or memory cards. A camera bag can reduce the risk of damage from dramatic temperature changes in the winter.
Electronics to Pack
Passports and Money
In the past, Americans were able to enter Canada using just their driver’s license, but current laws require a passport or passport card. Passport cards are slightly less expensive, but are only valid when driving across the borders or arriving by sea. If you are taking a plane, you’ll need a passport. Many Canadian cities along the border, such as Vancouver and Niagara Falls will accept and exchange American money, but if you are going to other areas, you’ll want to have Canadian money. You can get the best rates by requesting money from your bank or by using the ATM in Canada. Verify that your bank allows you to use the card internationally before you go.
