Ancient History
The original inhabitants of the Yucatán, the Mayans, left behind ancient stone monoliths that attract visitors from all over the world. Chichester Itza is probably the most well known of the Mayan Pyramids. You can rent a car or sign up for a bus tour to visit the ruins. Unfortunately, main pyramid is blocked off and tourists can no longer climb its steps. The ancient ruins of Tulum rest along the seashore. After browsing the ruins, you can swim in the ocean at the site’s edge. Be careful as the surf can get rough in this area. The ruins of the ancient city of Coba has the largest Mayan pyramid on the peninsula. It’s about a three hour drive from Cancun followed by a trek into the jungle. The jungle is hot and humid so bring plenty of water. You can still climb the Coba pyramid, however the steps are quite small and the incline steep. There is a fee to get into the park as well as a fee to use the restrooms.
Cancun’s Hotel Zone
Aside from the many all-inclusive resorts on the ocean with pools, water sports such as snorkeling, scuba diving, jet skiing and boating , and entertainment, there is still plenty to do throughout the Hotel Zone of Cancun. The Treasure Island Water Park offers a fun day of family adventure. There are cascading waterfalls, plunging water slides, towering water castles, a huge pirate ship, and more. There are also Baby and Kid’s Clubs to give mom and dad a chance to explore the park on their own. From your hotel or with tour agencies in the hotel zone, you can sign up for day cruise packages. For example, join the crew and sail to Isla Mujures for the day. These are also referred to as “booze cruises” because there is typically a lot of drinking going on in this party style atmosphere.
Shopping in Cancun
Cancun is considered a shopping haven, especially for jewelry. At the local malls you can also find designer brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Levi, and Diesel. The hotels have shops where you can purchase an assortment of items from jewelry to clothing and souvenirs. There are many local retailers in Cancun selling hand made Jewelry, art and other local crafts. Shopping is also available when going on tours as locals use these opportunities to sell their wares.
