History
The Basilica di San Fedele is a popular must-see in the city. The original church on the site dates from the sixth century and was dedicated to St Euphemia. The current structure dates from the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The architectural style is Romanesque, and the layout comprises three irregular naves in a central unit crossed by ambulatories. Women’s galleries are positioned above. The facade and bell tower have been altered as a result of restoration work in the early twentieth century. Medieval votive frescoes can be seen in the northern apse. In the right apse are eighteenth century paintings by C. I. Carloni, while in the left apse are 17th-century frescoes. The church’s ornate rose window dates from the sixteenth century.
There is also Como Cathedral, which is located in Duomo Square. It is a beautiful building attached to Como’s medieval town hall. Construction on the cathedral began in 1396, 10 years after the foundation of Milan Cathedral. The inside of the cathedral is particularly beautiful and well worth a look.
Finally, there is the old town of Como. The city was once fully-walled, and the streets in the Citta Murata (within the walls) still partly reflects what life was once like. The Citta Murata is now open mostly to pedestrians, which makes for pleasant walks. Its streets are narrow, cobbled in paths that wind their way through what was once a bustling Medieval town. These streets open out into small piazzas and give a glimpse into what the city was once like.
Entertainment
Like many other parts of Europe, Italy loves football or, as people from the United States call it, soccer. Still, Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia is a rather small stadium, even if it was rebuilt in 2001. Its maximum capacity is 13, 647, and it typically hosts home team supporters in the curva ovest. The away supporters typically stand in the other curva, the est (east) curva. There aren’t any huge games played at the stadium, but it remains a wonderful place to catch a match and admire the architecture.
Water lovers may prefer a trip onto the lake. The beauty of Lake Como is best appreciated from atop the waves, and a variety of boats run regularly between Como and other pretty lakeside towns. Along the way, you can admire gorgeous villas that belong to the rich and famous.
