Congress to vote on passport bill

Travel Weekly (registration required) reports that the already much-delayed initiative that would require passports for border crossings between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico is headed for another vote today that could further push back the plan’s deadline.

As currently proposed under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, passports will be required for border crossings starting in January 2007. The proposed amendment would push that deadline back about 17 months, to June 1, 2009. The amendment is supported by numerous travel industry associations and the governments of both Canada and Mexico.
