American Airlines announced last week it will soon accept major credit and debit cards for all onboard purchases. The list of items you’ll be able to charge includes food, alcoholic beverages, and those chintzy plastic headsets for in-flight movies and music. American has already rolled out the program on its Boeing 767-200 aircraft and expects to have its entire fleet of planes using “state-of-the-art, wireless hand-held” charge card devices by mid-June.
American is the first of the “Big Six” major airlines to give you the option of charging your in-flight meals and other purchases. Low-cost lines ATA and AirTran also accept plastic. ATA plans to stop accepting cash for purchases later this month, but American says it will continue to accept both paper and plastic.
