Crime After Dark in Boston and Other Warnings and Dangers

Crime in Boston

Boston is a lively New England city known for its excellent seafood, renowned colleges, and bustling nightlife. Like most major cities, however, Boston is not without its dangers. Here are several things to keep an eye out for when touring the city at night.

Areas to Avoid

It’s best for tourists to avoid most parts of Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan. Exploring in the daytime can be safe, but these areas are more dangerous than the rest of the city. All three are on the outer parts of the city, not close to downtown.

Be Aware in Large Crowds

Compared to larger cities, Boston has a low crime rate. Just like anywhere else, however, be sure to keep your personal items close to your body when you’re in a crowded area. Pay close attention to those who try to get close or you could be pickpocketed.

South End

Along and around Tremont Street south of Back Bay is the South End’s many picturesque brownstones and high-end eateries. However, south and southwest of this area can be dangerous after dark. Don’t walk here alone at night, and try to stay north of South Huntington Avenue.

Fenway Park

The Red Sox and historic Fenway Park are worth experiencing if you have the chance, but avoid walking around the surrounding area late at night, especially on your own. The bars in this area can get rowdy, and public neighborhood gardens called the Fens can attract homeless individuals and crime. Travel in groups, and stick to the streets adjacent the ball park.
