Cunard offers enrichment programs on fall cruises

Cruises aren’t just for sun and pampering. They can also provide opportunities for educational enrichment in a unique environment.

Cunard is using three of its fall transatlantic sailings to provide interesting learning programs for its guests, cosponsored by Conde Nast Traveler, The New Yorker, Gourmet, Architectural Digest, and Departures. These voyages will feature “lectures and demonstrations by well-known industry trendsetters in the worlds of art, design, dining, and literature.”

The September 6 sailing is themed “Literary Retreat on the High Seas” and will have guest lectures by three authors. The October 24 crossing focuses on “Modern Dance on the High Seas,” featuring lectures, performances, and classes by members of the Martha Graham Modern Dance Company. And, “Fine Living on the High Seas” is the hot topic on the November 5 cruise with food expert Dave Lieberman and interior designer Jamie Drake leading lectures and demonstrations.

Personally, if you were going to stick me on a ship in the middle of the ocean and not let me off for several days in a row, I would be forever grateful for a themed cruise on such fascinating topics. But I do know that lectures aren’t for everyone. Just remember, if you accidentally find yourself on a cruise with an enrichment program, you don’t have to attend the special sessions. And, I bet you’ll find the pool and the spa remarkably uncrowded at those times, as well.
