Inis Mor is the largest and most populous of Ireland’s Aran Islands, but that’s not saying much. The island is only around 7,500 acres big, and has a population of less than 1,000 residents.
There’s plenty to see on Inis Mor, though—so much so that it’s sometimes called an “outdoor museum” due to its 50 different monuments. Don’t miss the man-made sights of Dun Aonghasa Fort, the island’s many churches, or the Old Light House; or the natural wonders of the 300-foot high cliffs and the Worm Hole (a rectangular pool).
Inis Mor is also one of the few places in Ireland where you can still hear Gaelic spoken, although pretty much everyone on the island also speaks English fluently.
The water may be a bit too chilly for swimming, but the eastern side of Inis Mor features white sandy beaches.
Where is it? Off the west coast of Ireland.
Where to stay? For a small island, Inis Mor offers a number of accommodation options. We like the Kilmurvey House, located on the grounds of Dun Aengus.
What else should I know? Try to plan a visit during the Patrun festival, which takes place around the end of June and celebrates the island’s patron saint.
Who’s it for? History-lovers, hikers, bikers, Irish-culture fans.
