From its mountains to coastal areas, Maine experiences four diverse seasons. The most popular time to visit is during the warm summer months of July and August; especially in coastal communities. The fewest visitors come during the winter, except in ski areas. Pleasant weather and fall foliage make September a good time to travel through Maine.
high season: mid-June to October
low season: November, January to April
shoulder season: May to mid--June, December
Areas in Western Maine tend to be the busiest from December through March and August through October, while the rest of the year remains relatively slow.
Weather Information
The summers are warm with afternoon highs in the upper 70s or low 80s. Nights have mild weather, with cooler temperatures and low humidity. Winters are cold with temperatures averaging 22 degrees, and wind-chill factors that can feel as cold as 20 degrees below zero. Snowfall averages between 60 and 90 inches annually throughout the state, but melts quickly along the coast. Fall brings crisp air and colorful leaves, while spring is temperate, with many days of sporadic showers.
Crowd Information
The annual Maine Lobster Festival in Rockport during the first weekend in August is a very popular time to visit. Large crowds gather along the coast from July through August; however, the state is expansive and rarely experiences high visitor traffic at any other time of the year. Also, weekends tend to be busier than weekdays, even in winter.
Closure Information
Most hotels, restaurants, and attractions remain open throughout the year. Increasing numbers of coastal communities are staying open year-round, but some may still reduce hours or close during the winter. Check hours of operations with the specific Chamber of Commerce for each town.
When to Save
Since prices are set seasonally, the most economical time to visit is during the winter and spring low seasons when visitation and demand are lower. Discounts can also be found during the shoulder seasons.
When to Book
Book by March or April for travel during July and August, and book by May or June for fall weekends. Book one year in advance for special event weekends or if you have specific requests such as a room with an ocean view, suites, cottages, pet friendly, or a desired reservation for the first two weeks of August. Last-minute and package deals are available throughout the year, especially November through April.
