Direct Air Stops Service: Is This the End of the Airline?

Direct Air announced on Tuesday, March 13, that it has suspended all operations until May 15. A spokesperson said the airline had to quit flying because it failed to pay a fuel bill.

If you have a ticket on Direct Air, said the spokesperson, you should contact your credit card issuer for a refund. However, the line says nothing about helping you make alternative arrangements—for that, you’re on your own.

Although Direct Air might, in theory, manage to settle its fuel problems and resume flying, the outlook is not good. Asking that travelers pursue refunds through their credit card—rather than promising to initiate refunds—indicates the airline doesn’t have enough money to offer its own refunds.

If the airline is able to get back into the air, it will undoubtedly re-launch with a big “sale.” But anyone who had planned on flying Direct Air should start working on Plan B immediately.
