Amtrak will put its dome car on the Adirondack September 25 through November 4. Cars will operate northbound, Albany to Montreal, on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, with return trips Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays; no dome on Wednesdays. Seats in the dome will be unreserved, first come, first served, with no extra charge. Regular fares will apply, along with a 15% “I Love NY” discount off full adult fares, with advance reservations.
The Adirondack is a consensus “best” for scenery among all Amtrak trains in the East, and the dome car season is timed for fall foliage viewing. The car itself is Amtrak’s last remaining dome; it’s full-length glass-top car was originally built for the Great Northern’s “Empire Builder” in the 1950s. Although the press release doesn’t say, I suspect that the car operates northbound only from Albany rather than from New York because of potential problems handling the car in and around Penn Station.
