Off the Beaten Path in Dublin

Sometimes it is a good idea to leave the city and dust and noise behind. If you want to get out of the city for a day take the DART train out of town to somewhere like Malahide or Howth.

Avoca

Avoca is a small town near Arklow, in County Wicklow, 40 miles from Dublin, known for the Avoca Handweavers, a handmade goods company with a store and restaurant. Ballykissangel, the oldest working woollen mill in Ireland is also set in Avoca. The Meeting of the Waters is a beautiful place located just out of the town of Avoca, made famous by a famous Irish melody written by Thomas Moore in 1808. The village itself is a quiet and peacefull place perfect to tour on foot on a sunny afternoon.

Howth

Take the DART train to Howth, a beautifull village east of Dublin, with a wonderful marina and picturesque architecture. You’ll find a variety of fresh seafood in local restaurants and even some mouth-watering pub grub. The Baily Lighthouse is a historical lighthouse on the southeastern part of Howth Head. Enjoy breathtaking scenery when you hike up the labyrinth of paths leading to the lighthouse.

Malahide

Malahide is a smallish town on the coast to the north of the city. It’s a pretty town made of bright buildings and hanging baskets full of flowers. The most well known place here is the castle, which is within easy walking distance of the Dart station. You can also walk down to the marina area or stop off in one of the many restaurants or pubs.
