Dubrovnik Things to Do

There are many exciting things to do in Dubrovnik. Here’s what you need to know about the best attractions and things to do in Dubrovnik.

City Walls of Dubrovnik

The medieval city walls of Dubrovnik have protected it from invasion for centuries. Today, the walls are a huge tourist attraction. There are different points where you can enter the wall walkway and walk along the wall. It can be crowded, but you can beat the crowds if you get there early in the morning. Just after sunrise also gives you the perfect lighting for photos.

The ocean side of the wall is easy to walk and gives you breathtaking views of the city. The land side is a more challenging walk, but it offers a different perspective.

Stradun Street

Stradun is the main street that runs through Dubrovnik. It is the widest street in the city, and it divides the town into northern and southern halves. The limestone paving stones are well worn from hundreds of years of foot traffic. There are many shops and restaurants along the street, but the prices here are higher than other areas. It’s also where parades and gatherings take place.

Stardom Street connects the east gate, known as the Pile Gate, and the western gate, also known as the Ploce Gate. There is a fountain just inside each of these gates. Aqueducts outside the town supply fresh drinking water to the fountains, just as they have since the 15th century. The larger of the two is the Onofrio Fountain, which is located just inside the Piles gate. The fountain has 16 sides, and water comes from taps inside stone carved faces called maskerons.

Franciscan Church

The Franciscan Church was originally built in the 1300s. However, a massive earthquake devastated the church in 1667, and  Gothic ornaments above the entry doors are all that remains of its original gothic style. It was rebuilt in the Baroque style, and it was completed in the early 18th century. It’s a must see for anyone interested in classical churches or baroque architecture. When you enter the Old City through the Pile gate, you’ll find the entrance to the church on the left. A tour of the church normally takes about 30 minutes.

Lokrum Island

Lokrum Island is the perfect place for a day trip, particularly for the more adventurous. The island has lots of walking paths, places to swim, and a castle and monastery ruins. Breathtaking views and wildlife are there to greet you on Lokrum Island. You can get to the island by ferry.
