On Saturday, Chile was rocked by an 8.8-magnitude earthquake, one of the strongest quakes on record. Here is what travelers to Chile and elsewhere need to know.
Chile: The Santiago airport was closed, but now appears to be at least partially open. The Wall Street Journal reports that “planes resumed landings on a limited basis at the international airport.” Still, numerous airlines, including American, Delta, and LAN, are offering free itinerary changes for customers affected by the quake. Call your airline to find out what you can do to reschedule.
Elsewhere: Fears of devastating tsunamis roaring across the sea never materialized, but small tsunami waves did cause damage and some fatalities in coastal Chile.
At this time, however, there is no tsunami threat in the Pacific.
I’ll update this space as news breaks.
**Update, March 2** There are conflicting reports regarding whether or not Santiago’s airport is open. A press release from Turismo Chile said the airport is expected to reopen later this week, but LAN Airlines, the country’s home carrier, says a limited number of domestic and international flights will operate today.
