Located in the province of Santa Cruz, El Calafate is on the very edge of the South Patagonian Ice Field. Navigating the city leaves tourists with several different options, but below we have outlined just a few of the transportation choices when traveling throughout El Calafate, Argentina.

Car Rental

One option to get around the city is to simply rent a car. A car rental can be particularly handy when traveling between cities where taxis or public transportation are not always the most time efficient option. Be prepared to spend a little bit more on a car rental in El Calafate. To make renting a car economically feasible, be sure that there is at least a group of three people to split the total cost with.

Airport Taxi

To travel from the airport to the main city center of El Calafate, there are two main methods of transportation. Tourists have the option of taking the bus or hiring a taxi. To take a taxi from the airport to the city center, expect to pay about 140 pesos. The return trip from the city to the airport will be much cheaper only costing about 100 pesos. The reason for the price difference is that the taxi drivers must pay for a parking space at the airport while they wait for arriving passengers.

Short Flights

To travel from city to city often it is more cost efficient and faster to take a short flight. On the trip from Ushuaia to El Calafate, a flight can be reserved for about $80 a person. This certainly is better than a very long bus ride with little scenery along the way. Be sure to reserve a flight early to take advantage of the cheap airfare.
