Why would those of us from the chilly parts of North America take a winter visit to a European capital with a similar climate? In the case of Paris, the answer is simple: Cupid’s arrow flies there nonstop.
Many regard Paris among the world’s most romantic cities. From its old-world architecture to its legendary cuisine and wines, Paris has been known to melt even the most frozen hearts. And while dollar watchers know that the U.S. currency has been weak against the euro for some time now, there are several Paris promotions targeted at winning back the American budget traveler. And, since Europeans are more likely to travel during the summer, there should be plenty of midwinter availability in Paris. Vacant hotel rooms and off-season prices can make February an excellent time to explore the French capital.
Through May 31, FrenchExperience.com’s “Romance of Paris” package is available from $599, including all taxes and fees. This offer features three nights at the Aviatic Hotel on the city’s legendary left bank. Also included are an Illuminations of Paris bus tour, dinner at the Eiffel Tower’s Altitude 95 restaurant, a three-day Paris museum pass, a three-day Paris metro/bus pass, and round-trip airport transfers. For more information on the Aviatic Hotel, including user reviews, visit TripAdvisor, a SmarterTravel.com partner. When we checked, the Aviatic was ranked in the top quarter of all Paris hotels by past guests.
If you prefer to arrange your trip a la carte, check for the latest deals in our Hotel section, or search for lodging from multiple travel providers with our price-comparison tool. You can still purchase the museum and transit passes individually.
For $24.99, the Museum and Monument Pass gives you one day of unlimited admission to more than 70 participating venues. An even better value may be the $49.99 pass, which allows you three days to explore the same spots. Given that the Louvre alone costs 8.50 euros ($10.93) per adult, buying a pass may be a wise move for museum hoppers. An even cheaper option is to brave the crowds and go when your desired museums have free admission (the first Sunday of each month in the case of the Louvre).
One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to see Paris is by taking public transportation. For the biggest savings on the Metro and bus lines, the Paris Visite Pass starts at $12.99 per day for travel inside the city center. Additional days add to your savings, and a five-day pass now sells for just $36.99. Depending on how much you use the transport system, the Visite pass may be a good value for you.
These are but a few of the many ways you can make the City of Light your romantic destination this winter. With the streets relatively empty, you and your sweetheart can celebrate Valentine’s Day in style, at much lower prices than you’ll find later in the year.
