The Finger Lakes region is New York state’s version of Napa Valley—except more “secret” and less crowded. (And, okay, colder.) The region is based around lakes formed by glaciers, which resemble fingers (hence the name).
In the summer, the clear and clean lakes attract visitors for swimming, boating, kayaking, and many other water-sports. There’s also a number of great hiking trails on land. More satisfying than the hiking trails are the wine trails—there are over 100 wineries in the region. Combine a tour of the vineyards with stops on the Finger Lakes Cheese Trail for a delicious trip.
Although summer is the region’s peak season, fall is also a great time to visit if you’re into leaf peeping.
Where is it? Upstate New York. Fly into Greater Rochester International Airport (check prices), or Syracuse’s Hancock International Airport (check prices), and then drive the rest of the way.
Where to Stay? At the peaceful Sunrise Landing B&B, located on the shores of Seneca Lake.
What Else Should I Know? You’ll definitely need your own wheels to get around here, as public transportation is lacking in the region.
Who’s it For? Winos, photographers, shoppers, gourmands.
