Best Time to Go to Finland
If you can’t stomach the cold, visit Finland between spring and fall, when local temperatures are at their highest and the sun is shining nearly all day; this is peak season for travel to the country. But if you’re seeking Christmas cheer or the bright northern lights, plan a winter trip. While Finland gets notoriously chilly during winter months, it’s also a destination well known for its cold-weather activities — especially northern Finland, where travelers can ski, dog sled, watch the northern lights and even visit the home of Santa Claus in Lapland.
Finland on a Budget
While Finland has a reputation for being an expensive place to visit, there are plenty of ways to save, such as planning a trip during the right season. Unlike hotels in most Western European countries, accommodations in Finland tend to be most expensive during the winter months, especially in northern Finland. To save money, travel during summer and look for alternative lodging options within the country — self-catering cabins or campsites in the countryside are good bets. City travelers staying in Helsinki can find plenty of affordable or free activities, from biking through the city to sunbathing on local beaches.
