Got $1? That’s all you need to get to New York

After a few less-than-stellar bus experiences, I recently decided to swear off motor coach travel altogether.

But then I saw this. And it’s something I don’t think I’ll be able to pass up.

Bolt Bus, a new ultra-low-cost bus carrier from Greyhound, is offering one-way fares of $1 to and from New York. Service between New York and Washington, D.C., starts March 27, and the Boston Globe reports Bolt will begin runs between New York and Boston in April. In addition to $1 fares, the bus will offer free wireless Internet access for those bringing their laptop onboard. Once in Manhattan, the bus makes two stops: 33rd and 7th, and Canal and 6th.

Of course, there is a catch—not every seat is $1. But when I tested a few dates on the D.C. route for March travel, I found quite a few seats available at that low price. Other fares came in between $7 or $20 each way, still an excellent bargain.

Turns out I might be giving the bus another chance after all.
