Here’s How Hotels Are Catering to Flexible Travelers

Now that’s a headline you probably didn’t expect to see … but yes, it is true, some hotel chains are now offering varying check-out concepts that allow travelers to be more flexible with later check-out times, and a few are even offering day-stays. Next time you have an inconvenient flight time, need extra time to re-group while traveling, or really just need a nap, consider one of these trends—popping up at hotels around the globe.

Sleeping in Is the New Checking Out

Late-night flight? Still want to squeeze in one last meal or tourist attraction? One of the most annoying parts of traveling is that awkward time between check-out and your evening flight or train. After all, you have to make the most of those precious vacation days. Well, hotels are finally catching on, with many chains offering later check-out or a tiered check-out plan. Here are just a few brands that let you check out at a leisurely pace.

Where You Can Stay: Patina Hotels—Resorts in Singapore, Capella Hotels worldwide, the Absalon Hotel in Copenhagen, and the The Peninsula Beverly Hills have 24-hour-stay concepts. Yotel locations add a surcharge for later check-out with their new app, Shaggy, and Radisson hotels worldwide offer check-out times until 6 pm free of charge.

Day-Stays Are the New Airport Lounge

Long connection? Need a daycation? Day-stays are the latest craze in the hotel industry. This concept is best suited for business travelers who need a virtual office or those with a long connection; however, some popular beach resorts and hotels (mainly in Florida) are also jumping on the bandwagon. Most rooms are available at a discount up to 70 percent off the nightly rate and let guests check in and out at a variety of time slots.

Where You Can Stay: While many international chains are starting to offer this option (think Hilton, Hyatt, Westin, Novotel, Best Western and dozens more), it is mostly at chains located near major airports and cities (we found Chicago, New York City, and London to be the cities with the most options). Use these sites if you’re considering booking a day-stay on your next trip: Hotels By Day, Between 9 and 5, and Dayuse.
