A hotel’s nightly rate depends on a variety of factors—location, day, time of year, amenities, demand, and more. And while prices always fluctuate, I thought it would be fun to shop around and see what $250 would get you for one night at a hotel in 10 cities around the world. To do so, I talked to Kelsey Blodget, Senior Executive Editor at Oyster.com (SmarterTravel’s sister site), for an insider’s perspective.

Hotel Rooms Around the World for $250 Per Night
Curious? Check out 10 different hotel rooms around the world that go for approximately $250 per night.
New York City
For the Big Apple, Blodget advises, “In some cities, $250 per night can get you quite a luxurious hotel. In New York City, this isn’t always the case—but there certainly are some stylish upscale options in this price range, especially for travelers who don’t mind sacrificing a bit of elbow room and who don’t need to stay in Midtown. Though Midtown Manhattan is home to many of the city’s top tourist sights, the subway makes it easy to reach from other neighborhoods, and you’ll find more local haunts (and more locals) downtown. The Arlo SoHo epitomizes the type of New York hotel you can typically find in this price range—it’s in hip SoHo, it has trendy food and drink options, and rooms are sharp and contemporary—but itty-bitty, even by New York standards.”

Singapore
Surprisingly, $250 goes a long way in Singapore. For this price, you can stay at the Fairmont Singapore, located on top of Raffles City Mall in Singapore’s Riverside neighborhood. And while the Fairmont doesn’t have an Instagrammable infinity pool, it does offer a variety of on-site restaurants and a trendy bar, as well as a fitness center, six tennis courts, a spa, and an outdoor pool that is shared with its sister property next door. Guests note that there is a fee for Wi-Fi and the pool and spa could use a reno.

Rome
Rome may be one of the most popular European capitals to visit, but “Rome stands out for its affordability relative to other major European destinations,” says Blodget. “You tend to get a lot less bang for your buck at hotels in Paris, for example, than you do for hotels in Rome. The River Palace Hotel is a wonderful example of how much you can get for your money here. It’s a charming boutique hotel in an ornate Italian mansion, within walking distance of the Spanish Steps. You get character, history, and a central location at a fair price. The elegant rooms are a bit small, though.”

London
While $250 won’t get you much in terms of space in London, The Nadler Soho offers a swanky location (great for tourists and business travelers alike), local flair, and sleek design. It doesn’t have a gym or on-site restaurant, but the hotel partners with a local restaurant to provide (no-markup) room service. Guests also receive a discount at a nearby gym. Lower-category rooms are small, but have a kitchenette, free-Wi-Fi, and high-end linens and toiletries.

Bangkok
It’s no secret that travel to Southeast Asia is inexpensive for U.S. travelers, and Bangkok is no exception. For $250 a night you can afford a stay at one of the city’s most luxurious, five-star properties—Siam Kempinski Hotel. The pool area is the real star of this property, creating an island-like feel with saltwater swimming pools and gardens. Each room has a soaking tub and free Wi-Fi, and some also have private access to the pool area. The property is also home to one of Bangkok’s well-known restaurants, Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin (a Michelin-rated chef).

Paris
Prices fluctuate greatly in Paris, but the Hidden Hotel by Elegancia averages about $250 per night. It’s an environmentally friendly boutique property, with rooms on the smaller side. However, the location can’t be beat, close to the Metro and Champs-Elysees. The hotel only has 35 rooms, so you’ll want to book early at this property. A healthy breakfast bar is offered for an extra fee. Wi-Fi is included.

Hawaii
For $250 you’ll get a beautiful ocean view, free Wi-Fi, and chic decor at Turtle Bay Resort, on the North Shore of Oahu. In Hawaii, $250 hotels will vary drastically depending on the season and location, but Turtle Bay is a good example of what you’ll get with this price tag—a decent resort, but remote location. While Turtle Bay is self-contained—you’ll find activity offerings, an on-site bar and restaurant, and shops—you’ll need a car if you’re looking to go anywhere off-property. Tack on non-optional daily resort fees, and you’ll quickly realize $250 a night doesn’t go far in Hawaii.

Tokyo
Tokyo‘s hotel scene is pricey, with some luxury properties charging nightly rates in the thousands. If you want to stay in desirable neighborhoods like the Tokyo Station Area, be prepared to pay $250 for a very average room.
At The Prince Park Tower Tokyo in Shiba Park (about 2.5 miles south of Tokyo Station), you get free Wi-Fi, spacious rooms, and seven on-site restaurants, plus a bakery, bar, cafe, and lounge, as well as shuttle bus service to the train station and airport. However, the lower-category rooms aren’t anything special, and you’ll pay extra for access to the pool, spa, and fitness center.

Dubai
Depending on your location choice, you can get a lot for $250 per night in Dubai. Hotels on the beach will cost you thousands, but locations near shopping malls, golf courses, the business area, and the airport are more affordable and still offer Dubai-style luxury. While not on the beach, Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai does offer a central location close to the Metro, as well as a large outdoor pool, a swim-up bar, a spa, free Wi-Fi, a fitness center, and eight on-site restaurants, as well as bars and a nightclub. It’s considered one of Dubai’s top hotels, with views of either the ocean or Burj Khalifa.

Mexico City
You can score a room at most major, higher-end hotel chains in Mexico City for around $250 per night. The InterContinental Presidente Mexico City is located in the trendy Polanco neighborhood, near restaurants, bars, and shops. It’s also within walking distance of Mexico City’s popular tourist attractions, but it doesn’t have its own pool, and you have to pay for Wi-Fi (unless you’re a loyalty member). The property boasts seven on-site restaurants and bars, as well as contemporary decor and a full-service spa and fitness center. While this hotel attracts business travelers—including Barack Obama—it’s in a great location for tourists.
