Isola Bella is a delicate crown floating on the waters of Lake Maggiore in Italy’s Lake District. The historic summer residence of the Prince and Princess Boromeo, the tiny island is ringed with a 17th century baroque palace, elaborate terraced gardens, and a hillside village of shops and cafes.
Between March and October, the island draws thousands of daily visitors who come to marvel at the Murano glass chandeliers, labyrinthine grottoes, and the white peacocks gracing the Italian-style gardens. Just a short boat ride from the mainland town of Stresa, a trip to Isola Bella is a perfect excuse to ply the waters of Lake Maggiore and enjoy a boat’s-eye-view of the lake, the nearby islands, and the towering Alps.

When the Count Vitaliano Borromeo and Countess Marina Borromeo are in residence on the island, a flag is flown from a high point in the terraced gardens.
The Private Garden
A small portion of the garden is reserved for the private use of the family when they are in residence. Peek out the windows while touring the palazzo and you can get a glimpse of the citrus-tree-lined terrace.
The Garden's Many Delights
The garden's architectural features, including an amphitheater, terraces, and hundreds of statues and obelisks, make it a perfect place to end a visit to the palazzo.

Nearby islands include Isola dei Pescatori, which has a few inns and restaurants, and Isola Madre, which also has gardens you can visit.
