Things to Do in Jaipur
Jaipur is known as the Pink City. Some even refer to it as the Paris of India for its many glamorous sights, colors, and energy. There are countless things to do in Jaipur including lavish palaces, historic forts, and massive museums.
Grand Palaces
Stunning palaces give Jaipur its grand reputation. Visitors rave about City Palace, which dates from the 18th century. The opulent grounds were once home to a Maharaja, and today it serves as both a royal residence and a museum. Hawa Mahal is another elegant structure, also known as the Palace of Winds. The pink-toned building features a pyramid-like silhouette and a design representative of Krishna’s crown and a peacock’s tail.
Rambagh Palace is a grand hotel where it’s customary to enjoy tea on the lawn, sip a gin and tonic in a colonial-style bar, or watch a game of polo. This 19th-century palace is more than a hotel—it’s a popular tourist destination thanks to its historic past. It was once a hunting lodge and the home of the Maharaja of Jaipur, but its conversion to a modern hotel doesn’t take away from its illustrious past—visitors applaud the attention to detail and service.
Historic Forts
Set on a rocky hilltop, Amer Fort provides visitors with a truly Indian experience. Here, they can climb atop an elephant and take the slow stroll uphill to the fort. The interior is marvelously empirical, and guests recommend walking through the glass-decorated Sheesh Mahal. Another highly trafficked hilltop site is Jaigarh Fort, which visitors rave about for its exceptional views of Jaipur.
Nahargarh Fort sits at the highest point of Aravalis and is especially popular for its city views. It’s only open during daytime hours, and foreign tourists are charged a higher entry fee than locals. There is a camera fee that applies per camera. Also near the property is Madhavendra Bhawan, which is one of the best areas in Jaipur to glimpse some artwork on the walls of the courtyard.
Pink City Walls
There’s a reason for Jaipur’s colorful reputation: Part of the city is surrounded by an ornate pink wall. Seven gates are built into this elaborate structure, and visitors report that beyond the gates lie some of Jaipur’s most intriguing sights. The streets are packed with vehicles, animals, and street vendors peddling everything from flowers to vegetables. It’s more than hustle and bustle, but the wall boasts some of the most distinctive architecture in India and provides visitors with a unique look at the nation’s past.
