Killarney Things To Do
Killarney is one of the best-known places in Ireland for reason — it sits on some of the most beautiful national park land in the world. If you’re looking for the attractions and must-see things to do, then keep these suggestions in mind.
The Waters of Killarney
Travel on the Ring of Kerry, an extremely scenic road that goes around the Iveragh Peninsula. You can either rent a car or take a bus tour to learn more about the area from a local guide. Watch some very brave souls jump in the cold waters for adrenaline rush. Of course, no road trip would be complete without good food, so check out one of the villages along the way. From a scenic point called Ladies View you can enjoy far-flung views of far-off lakes. and the famed Torc Waterfall. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, go check out the falls itself: it’s a moderate climb, but the view of the natural falls will be worth it.
Killarney National Park
Killarney National Park was the first designated one in Ireland. It’s over 25,000 acres of rolling hills including woodlands, moors, gardens, waterways and mountains. This is the place to enjoy nature and see wildlife, but it’s also a place to see some truly tremendous castles and homes. The Muckross Abbey features an impressive property and grounds with paintings and antiques inside. You can wander around or take a guided tour. There’s also nearby Ross castle, which dates back to the 1600s.
Churches and Mountains
Marvel at stained-glass windows and centuries-old stone walls at St. Mary’s Catherdral. This Roman Catholic wonder was erected in the 19th Century, and is a perfect example of the Gothic Revival style of architecture. Learn more about the heroic feats and challenges that went into the construction or explore more of the mountains at the Gap of Dunloe: a gap in the mountains of Killarney and a great place to hike or take a horse-drawn cart. There’s parking in a small restaurant, and you can hike from there to find lakes, bridges, and valleys. Or visit Connor Pass, which is one of the highest mountain passes you’ll find in the whole country. It also gives you a great view of the Dingle Peninsula, and the Southwest Atlantic coastline.
