Historic Sites

History buffs will love Kingston. Walking tours are available throughout the city to give visitors a taste of the region’s storied past. The intimate setting lets you asked your period-costumed guide as many questions as you like to get deeper into the local history.

You’ll also enjoy visiting Fort Henry, originally built during the War of 1812. You’ll learn all about military history and life during the 19th century. The fort has been expertly restored to most closely replicate what it actually would have been like during the war.

Finally, the Bellevue House Historic Site takes you back to the 1840s in a restored version of the home of Canada’s first prime minister, John A. Macdonald.

Cultural Experiences

Through its labyrinth of streets and alleyways, you’ll get a real feel for the life and culture of the city, giving you an insider’s perspective. There is a real sense of community here, and you can feel it as you wander around visiting local shops and businesses along your way.

The Royal Military College is one of the most prominent structures in Kingston, so you would be remiss not to stop by at some point during your trip.

If you happen to be visiting during the summer, don’t miss the Skeleton Park Arts Festival, an annual summer solstice celebration showcasing local artists and musicians in a relaxed, fun setting that the whole city turns out for.

Stunning Views

The Murray Canal offers beautiful views of the Canadian countryside, allowing you to escape from the city and enjoy getting back to nature for a little while.

St. Mary’s Cathedral offers even more photo opportunities, featuring ribbed buttresses and spectacular stained glass windows acquired from England in the late 1800s.

If you have the time to include a cruise through the 1,000 islands, this offers a fantastic opportunity to take in incredible views of both Canada and the United States, as the St. Lawrence River runs right along the border. With more 1,800 islands in total throughout the region, you’ll definitely have your hands full trying to see them all! Helicopter tours over the islands are also available for the more adventurous travelers.
