La Spezia Things to Do
Simply put, La Spieza, resting comfortably on the Northwestern coast of Italy, is one of the most beautiful locales on earth. It is dotted with artistic villages, lush arbor, and some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean Sea. There is no shortage of things to do in the area, either.

Lerici
This area of the gulf is ideal for the traveler who likes to learn something while they are enjoying mind-blowing beaches. Lerici is home to a castle that dates back to Roman rule. The castle sits at the center of the township and is the home of a paleontological museum. The museum is just a short 10 km trip down the coast from La Spezia, making it easily accessible as an afternoon excursion. Once you get done touring the museum, go for a stroll on the beach and enjoy a meal in one of the amazing restaurants in the village. Everyone who comes to La Spezia should take time to check out Lerici.
The Marketplace
Many say that the heart of La Spezia lies in its business district, a tiny marketplace not far from the train station you rode in on. What is the point of coming to Italy if you aren’t going to take some time to shop? The marketplace of La Spezia is lined with some great little shops filled with curiosities that you can’t find anywhere else in the world. On top that, the area is full of delicious cafes. There are some great hotels in the area and this is where all locals and tourists mark their meeting place. The marketplace is certainly the most vibrant section of La Spieza. One great aspect of the marketplace for budget-conscious travelers is that La Spezia isn’t a “tourist trap” kind of location. There are plenty of local shops and mini marts where you can shop without being gouged on the price.
Portovenere
Portovenere is another great village in the La Spezia area. Noted for its amazing landscape and clear blue waters, it is accessible by car, train, and boat from La Spezia. You can even get there via bus in under an hour. Many older travelers like to come here because it is a little more quiet and serene than other parts of the area. Visitors have remarked that this is the quietest corner in the gulf. Anyone who visits La Spieza should make it a point to spend some time in this great little resort village.
Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre means “five towns” in English and that’s exactly what this area is. Each of the towns has its own quirks that set it apart from the other towns in the gulf inlet. The landscape is stark here as the coast is dotted with jagged rocks and cliffs, different than the sandy beaches in other parts of the gulf. Because of this, photographers love to visit and spend the day in Cinque Terre sightseeing and taking photos.
