Lago Maggiore Transportation – Taxi, Train, Bus and Airport Tips

Lago Maggiore Transportation

Located in the Lombardy region of Italy, Lago Maggiore is accessible via Milan. This lake district is incredibly picturesque and a frequent destination for Italians and international tourists alike.

Taxi

The most scenic way to explore Lago Maggiore is by ferry service. A day pass for the lake is a good value and a leisurely way to enjoy the lakeside resorts and the Borromean islands. Remember to bring a hat to protect you from the sun rays. The towns are along the lake, so transportation is mainly via water taxis and ferries.

Train

The towns on the southwest bank of the lake, Arona, Stresa, and Verbania, lie along one of the main train routes between Milan and Switzerland. Travelers who are not familiar with this region may find it strange that intercity trains stop at these small stations. On average, it takes about one hour to reach Lago Maggiore from Milan.

Bus

A public boat service connects all the major towns by the lake, from the north town of Locarno, in Switzerland, to the most southern Arona and vice-versa. It may not be the fastest way to travel, but it is certainly the most enjoyable. One-day tickets are valid from a certain port to another one and back, with unlimited trips among all the other ports.

Airport

By car you have to take the tollway Milano-Laghi, then the A26 to Domodossola, exit Arona or Baveno. Lago Maggiore is easy to reach from Milan, and the trip will take about one and a half hours, via train or bus, as both are available from the Malpensa Airport.
