According to press reports, union workers have called a six-day strike against the Heathrow Express high-speed rail link to central London, scheduled to start Sunday and Monday. Reports don’t make it clear if the Heathrow Express schedule will be shut down completely or if supervisory employees can keep some or all operations going.
In any event, you won’t have to walk to your London hotel. Although Heathrow Express may face problems, you have two other rail options that, presumably, will not be affected by the strike:
- Heathrow Connect runs trains from Heathrow Central (terminals 1 and 3) to Paddington, with a free connection from Terminals 4 and 5. Because it makes five enroute stops, Connect is a few minutes slower than the Express, but it’s also a lot less expensive—the one-way fare to Paddington is £8.50 (about $13.50), compared with the Express fare of £18.
- The Underground runs from terminals 1, 3, 4, and 5 to central London. Although it’s much slower than either the Express or Connect trains—and lacks facilities for baggage—the Underground can get you just about anywhere within the London area. The fare to the city center is around £5.
Also you have many bus and taxi options.
