Luanda Warnings and Dangers

More Warnings and Dangers in Luanda

Known for its Marginal seafront promenade featuring walking, jogging, skating and bicycle paths, Luanda is a fun city to visit. However, you need to direct your attention toward a few warnings while visiting this engrossing capital city of Angola.

Watch out for Land Mines and Open Manholes

Once Angola became independent from Portugal rule in 1975, land mines became a problem. Access to many Angolan areas is impossible because of land mines or unsafe roads. Furthermore, unmarked land mines exist in various locations.

If you love to go for walks, bear in mind that Luanda is not the best place to go for strolls. Unfortunately, numerous paths are inaccessible due to litter and open manholes. Since the quieter streets are blocked, you will end up going for a walk on a sidewalk surrounded by excessive vehicles.

Tap Water is Contaminated with Diseases

Do not make the mistake of drinking tap water in Luanda. The city still experiences outbreaks of typhoid fever, dysentery and other diseases caused by unsanitary tap water. If you feel thirsty, buy bottled water manufactured in Brazil or Portugal. You can also drink soda or juice provided that the beverages do not contain any water.

Protect Yourself from Contracting Malaria

In Luanda, malaria is a common occurrence. Besides the fact that the tap water is contaminated, the city has an inefficient sewer system harboring stagnant rain water. The water attracts mosquitoes carrying germs that cause malaria. You need to have a vigilant attitude about spraying your body with mosquito repellent 24 hours a day. Make sure you are using a reliable formula that protects you from bites.
