Hong Kong Subway

The Hong Kong Subway, with over 2.4 million riders daily, has 49 stations located in every major neighborhood. There are only four different subway lines, so it is very simple to use. Costs vary by distance traveled.

Most of the sites on Hong Kong Island are located on the Blue Line, which passes stops at Central, Admiralty, Wanchai and Causeway Bay. Tourist sites on Kowloon are mostly on the Red Line with stops at Tsim Sha Tsui, Jordan, and Yau Ma Tei. Both the Blue and Red Lines cross on Hong Kong Island at the Central and Admiralty stations.

How to Ride

You can buy either a Single Journey ticket or a Tourist Day Pass for one day of unlimited travel at the Automated Ticket Counters or at staffed ticket booths. You can pay with either cash or credit card. Insert your ticket or swipe your card at the entrance turnstile to enter the train platforms. If you’re using the ticket, don’t forget to take it back because you’ll need to put it into your destination turnstile to exit.

Octopus Card

Another option for rides is to buy the Octopus card, which is an electronic payment smartcard. It comes with an initial value but you can reload it as needed and it also works on the bus. Fares are slightly lower with the card. When you leave Hong Kong, the Octopus card can be refunded at the airport.
