MetroCard
MetroCards are cards, with preloaded fares, you can purchase to ride public transportation in New York City. With these cards, you can either pay for individual fares, or for several days worth of unlimited fares.
Buying a MetroCard
There’s a MetroCard ticket machine at every subway station, and at the Staten Island Ferry Landing. You can load it with a set amount of dollars and pay each fare individually until the money runs out, or you can buy a one, seven or 30 day unlimited ride pass. The smaller MetroCard passes are a good choice if you’re visiting the city for a short time. The card itself costs a dollar, and if you lose your card, then you will need to pay another dollar for a new one and lose any fares on the old card. This card is accepted on many major transportation routes, including the Staten Island Railway and the AirTrain to JFK.
Using the MetroCard
New York City has a good public transportation system which can take you to just about any location in the city. With this card, you will find it easy to travel, without the hassle of driving or parking a car, or the expense of a cab. You use your card by swiping it in the card reader at the turnstyle on the subway or the fare box on the bus. The machine or fare box will also show you how much you have left on your card.
