The elegant island of Murano is famous as one of the loveliest places in a lovely part of the world. This is where the Venetians kept their famous glassworks in order to keep the islands of Venice safe from fire. Today, travelers can easily get directly to the island from many places in Venice.

Getting There From Venice

The trip from Venice will take about thirty minutes from most parts of Venice once you get on a boat. If you’re short of funds, the cheapest way to get to Murano is to take a free boat. Glass factories will bring you there from the waters at San Marco. The only thing you need to do is agree to take a short, twenty-minute tour of the factory once you get off.

A Vaporetto Line

The local public boats in the area are known as vaporettos. These go everywhere along the Grand Canal. They also go to the island of Murano. The boats are divided into multiple lines so you want to pick the right one. The city public boat system has a few lines that run regularly throughout the day. If you are looking to get to Murano you can take the 41, and 42 lines. You can also take what is known as the DM or Directo Murano that will bring you right there. The boats stop at many places including the San Zaccharia stop that is right near San Marco. You’ll also find them at the Fondemente Nuove/Madonna Dell’Orto stops that are on the North side of Venice. The 12 and the 52 are the lines that leave from Fondament Nuove.

The Stations at the Island

Murano is not a large island. You can walk around the entire island in about two hours. There are four different stops to pick from once you take the public boat. Which particular stop you want to use will depend on how long you plan to stay and what you want to see. Many people pick the Museo station because it closest to the highly regarded Murano public glass museum.
