Nazaré Transportation

Walk, drive or take the bus, but the funicular (cable car) is the most popular and easiest route to explore Nazaré.

Walking

With a bit less than 15.000 inhabitants, Nazaré is still small enough to be explored on foot. It consists of three districts two of which (Sítio and Pederneira) are located on hilltops. These can be reached on scenic hikes within about 40 minutes from the beach front (Praia) in the city center.

Funicular

There is a funicular in Nazaré that connects the top of Sítio with the bottom of it in the central area. Originally established in 1889 to accomodate the townspeople on shortening their walking distance with much less time, the new (and current) cars were adopted in 2002. Two blue cars operate every 30 minutes or so both ways. This is the most convenient and fastest way of going between the two main sightseeing points of the town. Both tourists and people who live there use this furnicular alike. Unless you have a special transportation pass as a resident, you need to purchase the ticket every time you use it. The ticket costs no more than 1.5 euros.

Bus

Nazaré’s bus station can be found on the Av. Viera Guimaraes, right in the heart of the city center. From here most bigger cities of Portugal can be reached, including Porto, Lisbon and Peniche.
