Siesta Key, Florida
Located just a hop, skip, and a jump from Sarasota, Florida, Siesta Key is at the top of many reader's lists. In fact, several people commented that this is by far the best beach they have ever stepped foot on. The reasons are plain to see when you consider the powder-like sand stretches that go on for miles and the potential for a wide variety of wildlife sightings.
Reader tmcree said, "I love Siesta Key, Florida. It has white, wide beaches with powder soft sand. I have never seen a better place to watch the sunset! You can walk the crescent shaped beach for miles without encountering any obstacles other than the other people who are doing the same. There are also some secluded spots on the island if you want a little more privacy. Great accommodations are steps from the beach, and many choices for good food."
Reader anitae added, "No question in our minds. The beach at Siesta Key, Florida, just outside of Sarasota, has the best sand and is a pleasant place in general despite the fact that it can get crowded and parking can be a problem. But what good beach doesn't have those problems!"

Destin, Florida
Located along Florida's Emerald Coast, Destin offers sand as soft as sugar, and the crystal clear waters and natural surroundings are just as sweet. The city is a top spot among families, couples, beach-lovers, and those who come for water sports like fishing, snorkeling, dolphin cruising, and scuba diving. Our readers seem smitten with this beach and had a lot to say about why it is the best.
Reader acreighton said, "Destin, Florida has the finest, whitest sand and is a perfect spot for couples or families. There are many reasonable rental properties—condos, homes, time-shares, hotels and motels. Great secret along the Gulf Coast, between Pensacola and Panama City. Great golf courses, great fishing! Has all the amenities of larger resorts but less crowds. Beautiful place for weddings on the beach."
Another fan of the soft sand, reader QB01Mom added, "Our favorite beach is a family beach: Destin, Florida. The soft, white sand, emerald waters, and family-friendly atmosphere entice us to return every year for a 20-hour car ride to enjoy spring break. The locals have been very nice and seem to love sharing their fantastic waters with the rest of the world. We have watched dolphins swim next to us as well as played volleyball in the sand. We look forward to the middle of March every year!"

Horseshoe Bay, Bermuda
Horseshoe Bay is shaped just as the name suggests, and some readers believe it is unmatched in its natural beauty and facilities. With concession stands renting everything from snorkeling equipment to beach chairs—while selling sunscreen, snacks, and towels—visitors want for very little while visiting.
Reader Melody Parris said, "The beach I enjoy the most is Horseshoe Beach in Southampton Parish of Bermuda. Its pink pristine sand is absolutely beautiful. The waters are sparkling blue inviting you to dive in. Very often there are various beach sports going on—volleyball, sports team training, etc. There is also an annual sand sculpture competition which lends to creativity and a kite flying competition on Good Friday. You will find people swimming all year round. The beach is also periodically used for special events such as parties and shows."
Reader Kell52 added, "We love Horseshoe Bay in Bermuda—we arrive in Bermuda, get out mopeds, and [head] off to the beach. Even when the cruise ships are in you can walk down the beach and usually find a quiet place. Up over a little incline there is a secluded place that is great for families with little ones—just small little waves perfect for children. There are showers and changing rooms, a place to rent chairs, water equipment, and a pretty decent snack shack. It is not unusual for us to spend eight to nine hours on this beach—it is just beautiful!"

Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii
When reader coligny insisted, "Kailua Beach on Oahu in Hawaii has to be included in this list," we listened. Less than 15 miles northeast of Honolulu, Kailua offers a nice reprieve from the hustle-and-bustle of the popular city.
Reader manasi likes its location, and said, "Just a short ride away from the more popular, more crowded Waikiki beach. Almost empty of tourists and with sugary white sand, clear turquoise water, and mountains in the backdrop, it's exquisite. Best of all, there is an island not too far from shore where you can row to and watch a lot of birds and wildlife. Really makes a great break from Waikiki."
Reader Roomba1 added, "The beach at Kailua, Oahu in The Islands of Hawaii is the finest!!! The white sand feels like one is walking on fine sifted flour! The water is the purest aqua blue and clear, and there are trees and the sunsets are magnificent. One must take a trail between houses to get there, but it is totally worth it. It is the perfect place for family picnics or for romantic walks on the beach."

Flamenco Beach, Culebra, Puerto Rico
With an endless horizon and sand as far as the eye can see, Flamenco Beach is a sun baby's delight. The beach has received accolades as one of the most beautiful beaches before from the Discovery Channel, and our readers agree.
Reader cattawissa said, "Flamenco Beach, Culebra, Puerto Rico, is the best! A huge ring of powder-white sand [surrounds] the most beautiful colors of blue--deep blue to turquoise. A nice campground and food kiosks with great Puerto Rican food make it accessible to any budget. So why is it peaceful and uncrowded? I guess I shouldn't tell anyone."
Reader justjewelz agrees that Flamenco is a hidden gem, and said, "Untouched surroundings, all natural, it is not commercialized, and it is pure beach heaven. Soft sand, clear blue water, and mountains in its natural state. Great to snorkel, float, and admire one of the world's greatest beaches.

Baby Beach, Aruba
Located in Seroe Colorado at the southeastern tip of Aruba, Baby Beach surrounds a serene lagoon. A refreshment stand is available for those in need of a snack, but not many people stay on shore. Our readers were mesmerized by the shallow waters which eventually lead to a kaleidoscope of colorful fish in the deeper sea.
Reader leonidas said, "Baby Beach on the southern tip of Aruba is a new favorite. Frequented by locals (who must know something) it has a myriad of fish to view in warm and beautiful waters on a nice white sand beach cooled by Aruba's constant trade winds. Shallow for the most part and very calm."
Reader merrie57 added, "Baby Beach in Aruba is quiet [and] very large with white sand. It starts off ... [with] waters [so] shallow that a baby could play in. The farther you walk out or swim, the deeper it gets until you start seeing beautiful tropical fish. I referred to it as one giant bathtub."

Hanalei Bay, Kauai, Hawaii
Shaped like a long half moon, Hanalei Bay makes some visitors believe they are in another world. Located in the shadow of Bali Hai, this beach is a favorite among our readers when it comes to a sandy escape.
Reader kauai33 said, "Hanalei Bay MUST be included on this list. Though part of me hesitates to broadcast it since more people might flock to it, and part of its charm and incredible beauty is its peaceful and uncrowded atmosphere. It is surrounded by the Bali Hai Mountains, is occupied by the famed Hanalei Pier, and is a spectacular two mile crescent of soft, white sand. I walk it often in my [mind], imagining every beautiful home surrounding this bay, seeing the surfers, and the rolling waves. I think I have even seen the word PARADISE inside the tunnels of these waves!"
Reader WalnutBaron added, "I nominate the beach at Hanalei Bay near Princeville on the island of Kaaui. It's a spectacular white sand beach stretching for more than a mile, ringing the beautiful inlet called Hanalei Bay. It's protected by a reef which makes it perfect for kids to play in the sand and water, but it's also ideal for surfers further out beyond the reef. And, to top it all off, it sits in the shadow of the mythical Bali Hai Mountain which plunges into the ocean and looks so close you can touch it. By the way, my nomination is apparently in good company: "Dr. Beach" named Hanalei Bay as America's Best Beach of all in May 2009."

Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii
With a backdrop of world-class restaurants, hotels, and shopping, Waikiki is a popular place to have fun in the sun, while enjoying the modern perks of a big city. Several readers think its close proximity to the hustle and bustle is what sets this beach apart.
Reader RobZonie said, "Best beach? Waikiki. Particularly the stretch of sand fronting the Royal Hawaiian—the Pink Palace of the Pacific. This is the quintessential Hawaiian beach. Near the top of the crescent running from Fort de Russy to Diamond Head, the water here is relatively calm, perfect for swimming. Further out you'll find respectable waves for the tourist surfer—nothing like North Shore, but that's not always a bad thing. Waikiki is a place to see and be seen, so don't be surprised if a celebrity makes a cameo as an extra in your vacation photos. And it is a world famous attraction; you're just as likely to spread a towel next to someone from Japan, France, or Rhode Island, as you are a local ... maybe more so. Sun, sand, scenery, and citizenry from around the world—perfect!"
Reader bdarrah added, "This is a beautiful beach with the backdrop of Diamond Head. Hawaiians have avoided construction or signs blocking the view of this volcano. The view of Waikiki from the top of Diamond Head is breathtaking. Waikiki is a melting pot of locals and visitors from all over the world. Having a Mai Tai at the Banyan Court of the Moana Hotel makes a special evening listening to Hawaiian music and the sound of the surf. Keep Smiling and Aloha."

Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
With crystal-clear waters and an array of water sports, such as parasailing, Seven Mile Beach—which isn't exactly seven miles, shhhh—attracts people from all over the world, including quite a few of our readers. The beach's location (close to many hotels, restaurants, and shops) makes it a convenient choice for those who appreciate amenities.
Reader jonellcarey is an obvious fan, and said, "Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman, is as close to heaven on earth as I can imagine. The pure white sugar sand beach is stunningly beautiful. The water color and quality is perfect inside a protective reef making it a world class location for snorkeling, water play, and wildlife viewing. The uncrowded beach is situated directly facing west so as to be able to experience breathtaking sunsets made even more perfect by a traditional Cayman rum punch. Add the one you love and who could possibly ask for more..."
Reader alm751 kept it simple, "Seven Mile Beach—beautiful during the day and at sunset—never get tired of going there."

Bowman's Beach, Sanibel Island, Florida
Known as one of the best places for shelling, Bowman's Beach is more than just pretty husks. Its location on Sanibel Island provides an undiscovered quality not found with some of its bigger neighbors. Our readers enjoy the natural beauty and secluded feel of the surrounding area.
Reader JKinchen said, "Bowman's beach on Sanibel Island, Florida, is our favorite. It is situated in a state park so the views are uncluttered by condos or houses on the beach. There are tremendous amounts of wildlife—we've seen dolphins, manatees, ospreys, ibises, herons, and pelicans all in the same day. The shelling is legendary—the whole beach is just pulverized shell sand along with the beautiful specimens that get washed up. The surf is easy and pleasant—great for kids and shelling. But most spectacularly, the sunsets are amazing. Most people on the island plan their day so as to be on the beach at sunset. More days than not—it is truly breathtaking."
Though she started out on the fence, reader sylvia said, "This is a tough one. There are gorgeous beaches all over the world. But my favorite beach, Bowman's Beach on Sanibel Island, is unique. I had long known of the great shelling, but did not know how fantastic a place this is for nature viewing. All kinds of birds and dolphins can be seen every day. A day at the beach is a sight delight!"

Boracay Island, Philippines
A bit off the beaten path, Boracay Island provides undeveloped scenery in a lush natural setting. Our readers like it because it offers a serene escape from the everyday life, with plenty of entertainment options.
Reader Sheila said, "My favorite Beach is Borocay in the Philippines. The sand is soft and white and the water is clear, clean, and brilliant turquoise and azure. The children and townspeople nearby are sweet. It isn't overdeveloped yet. You can sit at a bar, chat with friends, go dancing, have a quiet intimate dinner at the place of your choice along the main strip of beach, or you can rent a motorbike or tuk-tuk and discover more secluded areas."
Reader Haydne added, "Everything about it was awesome. Getting there was an experience; plane, bus, boat, moped. Crystal clear, blue water on your doorstep. Pure silky white sand. The hotels made from bamboo. The Asian food. The cliff top bar. The tropical jungle, and even the Flintstones style bowling alley, with concrete balls, bamboo floors, and some poor fella rolling the ball back to you!"

Bavaro Beach, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
Located in Punta Cana, Bavaro Beach wins big with our readers for its pristine white beaches and unique surroundings. The area is also popular for resort-goers, with a slew of all-inclusive places to stay.
Reader Ranger said, "Bavaro Beach in the Dominican Republic. The beach is 23 miles long, beautiful white fine grain sand, wide beach (from high tide to tree line). Gorgeous views any time of the day. Simply love this beach!"
Reader JazzerLG added, "Miles of beautiful fine white sand beach, beautiful serene blue water, very comfortable breezes, and many, many lovely people. I have found no comparison as of yet, but I am sure there are more."

Cannon Beach, Oregon
Oregon isn't typically thought of as a beach vacation spot, but according to our readers, it's time to think again. Cannon Beach offers four miles of soft sand ideal for strolling, shelling, or sitting by a fire. Haystack Rock, the beach's famous landmark, towers in the distance and provides a unique landscape.
Reader shanna58 said, "The magic of the Oregon coast is often missed because it doesn't fit the blue water/white sand stereotype. But drive the coast and end up at Cannon Beach, [and] I think you will have a great experience!"
Reader Gayle Löve Swanson added, "The whole Oregon coast is full of beaches and all are public access. The water is COLD, though, so not much swimming. They're great for gathering driftwood and shells and sea-glass, [especially] after storms. The beaches at Seaside and Cannon Beach are long and make for great beach walks, and bonfires complete with s'mores!"

Trunk Bay, St. John
As one of the more popular beaches on St. John, Trunk Bay is also considered one of the most beautiful. Plus, it provides modern amenities without overshadowing its natural surroundings. Our readers raved about the snorkeling and soft sand.
Reader repleo said, "My favorite is Trunk Bay, St John, Virgin Islands. It has beautiful white sand, clear aqua warm water, spectacular views across the water to BVI with [a] small rocky islet in the foreground, snorkeling trail from the beach, comprehensive facilities hidden from the beach, no buildings visible from beach, [and] natural tree shade. The sand is soft but firm enough for walking on. Beach is long enough to be able to find a secluded area even if the cruise ships are in. Heaven on earth."
Reader barnesfest added, "I love Trunk Bay in St. John. Powdery white sand, aqua blue water—and less crowded than other top beaches. Try to make it on a day when there is no cruise ship traffic in from St. Thomas."

Outer Banks, North Carolina
With outdoor activities, historic sites, and soft sandy beaches, the Outer Banks is a popular vacation spot among families, couples, and seniors. Our readers believe its claim to fame is its staying power, and visit it time and again.
Reader Lorri Robey said, "The very best beach in the world is in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The town specifically is Kill Devil Hills. Just hearing the name brings back the best memories. We have been vacationing here every August for more than twenty years. Family and friends relaxing and having fun on the warm sunny sand, playing beach games; staying out on the beach until sunset, laughing, talking and making more memories. Just the thought can warm up a winter's day with anticipation of the summer to come. The water is warm, the waves are big and so much fun to ride. The breeze is always blowing with kites flying, sea grass on the dunes swaying. The days are perfect for strolling the beach, or playing with friends, or doing nothing at all, just simply taking a nap with the sounds of the surf rolling as you drift off to sleep. This truly is our paradise!"
Reader kd33 added, "My favorite beach to go to is Cape Hatteras National Seashore, North Carolina. There are miles and miles of private white sandy beaches—great dolphin watching and wind sailing."
