This should be an ideal time to cash in your frequent flyer miles for a free flight.

As a result of the global economic downturn, demand for travel has plummeted. So the airlines have plenty of empty seats. And common sense suggests that they should be opening up those seats for award travel.

But is that what’s actually happening?
