Spiaggia Grande
This the main beach in Positano. It is accessible via a series of steps down the hill. Some hotels also provide and elevator their patrons. The beach has pebbled soil rather than fine sand so bring your beach shoes. Rent an umbrella and a beach chair. Behind you lies one of the most charming towns in Italy while in front of you are warm blue waters.
Go Hiking
The mountainside hills of Positano make a fine place to explore when the weather is cooler. Start at the bottom of the town and then make your way up. There’s a large main walkway that leads through the town and brings you across walkways strewn with flowers. Right behind the town are a series of mountain paths that you can follow known as the path of the gods. Climb to the very top to get a grand view of the entire area.
Center of Town
The center of Positano is small but it does have lots of cafes and restaurants. The Via del Mulini will take you here from the beach. This is where you’ll find the heart of the town including magnificent summer villas and lots of shops. In the center is also where you’ll see the historic Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta. Dating from the Byzantine era when Positano was part of the Republic of Amalfi, it makes a fine place to explore. The other streets in the center are the Via Pasitea and Via Christofo Colombo. The center of town is really steep. You’ll find lots of small steps connecting each alleyway. Use caution as such steps can be slippery, especially when it rains.
Take a Day Trip
Just off the coast of the town and toward the south are some the loveliest islands in Italy. You can start with a trip to Amalfi. It’s just down the coast from Positano. Drive there or get on a bus for about half an hour. Amalfi is like Positano but somewhat less hilly and therefore easier to navigate, particularly if you have mobility issues. There’s also a beach and a charming downtown area. Another popular day trip from Positano is the island of Capri. Famous for the waters of the blue grotto, Capri offers several equally charming towns. Take the funicular up to the center of the island for views back to the coast. It’s a town of lemon groves and blue waters. Boats run from Positano to Capri several times a day in the summer.
