Progreso Things to Do
Progreso started out as a fishing village but about 50 years ago that started to change. Now it’s a popular tourist destination for Americans and Canadians as weather is a lot better than it is up north.
What to Expect in the Yucatan
Natural beauty thrives in the Yucatan. Experience exhilarating outdoor adventures. Imagine climbing ancient pyramids or leaping into a crystal clear cenote lit only by a beam of sunlight. There are thousands of cenotes in the Yucatan and no two are the same. On the beach you’ll find lots of pretty seashells and may spot the occasional dolphin. In the offseason it’s very tranquil and you can walk for miles. The beach itself is almost shadeless with most of its palm trees lost to hurricanes.
Celestun Biophere Reserve
One of the world’s largest nesting grounds for the pink flamingo, you can take a boat trip on the “ria” and admire hundreds of flamingos and up to 320 species of birds. The boat will also take you through one of the passageways of the mangrove swamps lining the estuary. There is also a refreshing cenote where you can take a dip and a “petrified forest” which is really a forest of dead trees killed by seawater.
Visit the Mayan ruins at Dzibilchaltun
Dzibilchaltun offers a museum of the Mayan people, an archeological site, a park and a cenote. The ruins are located about 20 miles from Progreso. There’s lots of room to stroll around and take pictures. Bring your bathing suit for a refreshing swim.
During your trip to the Yucatan enjoy swimming, snorkeling and scuba in the cenotes. See lush vegetation, caverns and rock formations. While you’re near the pier, you’ll see the local lighthouse which visitors are allowed to climb. The Yucatan people have a “laid back” way of life which is just another appeal to the northerners who come to visit.
