I went a remarkable jaunt into Scotland last time I was in the UK with a friend. It is only a 3 hour train ride from London (and a beautiful journey up the coast). We stayed in Edinburgh for three days and had such an amazing time! We kept costs down by staying at Castle Rock Hostel. I loved this hostel, it was nice and tidy, close to the center of town and the castle (obviously) and the staff was nice and friendly. They offer a cheap option for breakfast as well.
Edinburgh is enchanting, it is full of unique shops and pubs as well as historic sites. We loved touring the castle (and the armory shop nearby, I bought a sword that is still one of the best souvenirs I have ever purchased). As well as Holly rood Palace, plenty of whiskey tasting options and don’t forget to try the haggis (just do it, it’s delish).
We then took a bus tour up through the highlands to Lochness (for a boat tour). The bus picks you up right outside the hostel and if you aren’t completely enchanted by the highlands than I will eat my hat! The mountains, the cliffs, the yaks! Also do take one of the haunted/ghost tours in the caverns (the city underneath Edinburgh) it is delightfully spooky! Top tip for Scotland is to wear good shoes, pack a poncho and/or umbrella, and consider an option other than jeans cause they take FOREVER to dry out if you get caught in the rain (and you will)!
