SmarterTravel Spotlight: St. Gregory Hotel, Washington, D.C.

The luxurious and thoughtfully designed St. Gregory Hotel provides a quiet refuge in the heart of Washington, D.C. The spacious rooms, deluxe amenities, and central location make this the perfect base for exploring the nation’s capital.

The Location

St. Gregory Hotel Location

Centrally located in Dupont Circle, the St. Gregory Hotel is within easy walking distance of many of D.C’s most popular attractions, including the White House, Renwick Gallery, the Washington Monument, and the National Mall. There are three Metro stations less than 10 minutes away, making it quick to get around. The lively area means you’ll have plenty of options for dining and entertainment right outside your room.

The Rooms

The St. Gregory’s 156 rooms were all completely renovated in 2018, and the rooms still look brand-new. There are many different room styles to choose from, including studios, suites, and allergy-friendly PURE rooms. I stayed in a one-bedroom king suite, which at 850 square feet is larger than many apartments that you’ll find in the area. This luxurious suite had a separate sitting room complete with a comfortable sofa, mini-fridge, microwave, and sink (in case you wanted to have a meal or two in). In the bedroom, a king bed provided plenty of space for sleeping, and there was also a desk that made it easy to get work done. The bathroom was stocked with L’Occitane bath products, as well as plush robes and slippers.

Dining

The hotel serves a delicious complimentary breakfast buffet each morning. The buffet is stocked with plenty of healthy options, such as a build-your-own yogurt parfait, as well as more indulgent pastry and bread options. La Colombe coffee is served both at breakfast and in the lobby (free for guests).

The main dining attraction in the hotel is the highly rated St. Greg Kitchen & Bar, which attracts food-loving locals as well as guests. The St. Greg serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and is a great place to hang out with a cocktail and people-watch (or to get great D.C. recommendations from the friendly bartender). The restaurant’s Mediterranean theme results in fresh, bright dishes that will leave you feeling fulfilled but not stuffed. My favorites here were the Mediterranean board with homemade hummus, falafel, tzatziki, and tabbouleh, and the Israeli couscous salad with avocado, tomatoes, almonds, basil, and burrata.

Amenities

There are lots of great amenities at the St. Gregory Hotel, but the most popular is probably the nightly wine hour. Each night, the hotel serves up free wine in the lobby for an hour, so guests can mingle next to the fireplace and make new friends (or just grab a glass to take back to their rooms). The hotel also offers free bottled water in each room. The brand-new fitness center is stocked with Peloton bikes (and a free log-in, so you can work out without a membership) along with weights, treadmills, and elliptical machines.
